A Very Good Week for Play!

I am interrupting our regularly scheduled Frolic Friday post to reflect on what a good week it has been for play. Of course, this does not excuse you from getting outside and playing this long holiday weekend! But with all of the trips to the beach and cookouts planned as part of the holiday tradition, I figured you all are covered.

As an advocate, it’s exciting to see the issue you care about start popping up in mainstream news sources. While this has been happening with play here and there, this week, there seemed to be a flurry of pieces popping up. As children are starting back to school, I am encouraged to see the need for play making headlines.

Play Deprivation Gets Traction

Recently, the Huffington Post ran a story from Darrell Hammond, CEO of KaBOOM!, on the state of play in America. I encourage you all to read the piece and leave comments. The more voices we add to the chorus calling for change, the better. The first step to advocacy is finding your voice.

“Go outside and play,” was once a very common phrase used in America, but those days have gone. In today’s society, children spend 50% less time outside than they did just 20 years ago. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, kids are spending 6.5 hours a day with electronic media — making the sofa or desk chair their favorite place “to play.”
