Frolic Friday: Back in the Saddle

Ecuador 2009 Trip 0862

TGSG Note: You may have noticed, I’ve been on a bit of a break lately. Sadly, I was not in a hammock on an island, but on what I am calling a “Flake Break.” Sometimes, when life gets too hectic, you just have to give yourself permission to flake-out.

We adults are a lot like kids that way — we need down time, play time, time to relax, and time to just be.

So, if you haven’t just been in awhile — go ahead. I will write you a note. :-) Bethe

OK, it’s that time again — Frolic Friday! Time to let your hair down, blow off some steam, and have some fun.

Some of us are knee-deep in a very cold winter, so getting outside may not be high atop our list. But, even a few minutes outside can help boost your energy and improve your mood. Besides, it gives us a good excuse to make hot chocolate.

This weekend, why not…

  • Get your bird on! Go on a nest hunt. Winter is the perfect time to look for bird (and squirrel) nests. They are much easier to spot with all the leaves off the trees. While your at it, why not start a Winter Bird List? Alison Kerr tells you how over at Loving Nature’s Garden.
  • Got the winter blues? Start dreaming up a spring garden! Check out seed catalogs or take a trip to the library and let your imagination run wild in the gardening section. Have kids? Get them in on the action, too! They can draw their fantasy garden or make a diorama.
  • Looking for a fun nature-related craft? Make a gorgeous Winter Tree Silhouette, like those featured on the Frugal Family Fun Blog.

As always, it doesn’t matter what you do, just make some time for play and connecting with nature this weekend. It’s good for big and little kids alike!

Buzzing About Bees

Jardin des Plantes bee2

TGSG Note:  As you probably know by now, I don’t just believe in playing outdoors, but also in being a good steward of the environment. I am so happy to share this post today and be part of #Tweehive, an international Twitter event to raise awareness about the plight of bees. And besides — bees are really incredible creatures! They get short-changed in the shadow of “sexier” critters like wolves and bald eagles. I say, viva bees! Frolic Friday will return next week (but don’t forget to go outside and play this weekend!) See ya outside! – The Grass Stain Guru

When’s the last time you gave bees a thought? That’s right: BEES. Unless you are a gardener or entomologist, you probably don’t think much about them at all. Sure, we LOVE flowers — getting them for birthdays or Valentine’s Day. We like to have pots of flowers on our porches and see fields full of them when we drive down the highway. Or, how about honey? We love it in our tea or spread on toast, but how often do we think about all the work that went into making it?

Um, without bees –  no flowers or honey. It’s pretty simple math, really.

Or how about food? Do you like eating? A fan of food? Scientists estimate that every 3rd bite of food we eat comes to use via animal pollination — or roughly 80% of crops (Source: Pollinator Partnership). Amazing, isn’t it?! So you see, bees play a big part of our daily rituals and happiness, not to mention feeding us, whether we think about it or not.

Bees, as it turns out, are vitally important to life. So, let’s get excited about helping them out! Like other pollinators, they are in peril, and we need to step up to the plate to protect them.

Here’s a few things you can do:

And remember, next time someone tells you you’re the bees knees, take it as the highest form of compliment! I know I will.

Frolic Friday #7: The Art Edition

Sidewalk Chalk Flood 4-18-09 7
It’s that time again, folks — the end of another busy week! Time to relax and make the time for some fun. It’s also Turnoff Week, so there is extra incentive to get out for extra play outdoors time. And if all that isn’t enough, today is The Grass Stain Guru’s birthday, so as a special present to me, please get out there and earn this week’s grass stains! (Um, I also love daisies and dark chocolate — just sayin’.)

I am dedicating this week to the artists and crafters out there. If you follow me on Twitter, you know what a sucker I am for art and photography! Nature is an amazing source of artistic inspiration. Seriously, who can argue with Claude Monet or Ansel Adams?

Why not…

  • Pick a few spring blooms for flower pressing. You can use these to decorate cards, picture frames, and more;
  • Set-up an easel and try your hand at painting a landscape or dust off your sketch pad and draw your favorite tree; or
  • Take your camera on a hike, capturing spring’s glory in bloom. You’ll be amazed at the shots you can get, and might even come up with some new art work for your home.

Again, it doesn’t matter WHAT you do — just get outside and enjoy yourselves. And get the kids in your world out the door, too! There is joy and wonder waiting. Why put it off another minute?
