PSA: Can’t Miss Summer Fun

 Watermelon

Here they come — those incredible summer days and nights we dream of most of the year are upon us and will pass us by quicker than I care to think about.

So consider this a little Public Service Announcement from your friendly neighborhood Grass Stain Guru

GO OUTSIDE & PLAY.

Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. No excuses. And seriously, the air conditioning will be waiting for you…and will feel even better when you go outside and get your play on!

  1. Catch fireflies
  2. Run through the sprinkler or have a wet sponge fight
  3. Roast the perfect marshmallow or challenge yourself to come up with a gourmet s’more recipe
  4. Head to a nearby fishing hole.  Take a child who has never had the opportunity and watch their eyes light up.
  5. Try geocaching
  6. Have a watermelon seed spitting contest
  7. Camp. Backyard, tree house or nearby county or state park — it doesn’t matter as long as you sleep outside
  8. Eat a popsicle under a shade tree and play The Cloud Game
  9. Find a nearby trail and hike when the sun is not too high — early in the morning or at dusk

Oh, and why not spice up your summer with a tasty adult popsicle or three?! Check out my friend Jerry James Stone’s recipe for Mango Fruit and Tequila Popsicles with Serrano. Noms! Don’t worry, he has lots of great non-boozey recipes, too. :-)

When September comes and the kids head back to school and the summer light starts to fade, you will have such fond memories of time spent in the pursuit of play — and making the most of this gorgeous planet that we call home.

Trust me — this fact will make you happy. The end.

Don’t miss out. Mother Nature has something great waiting for you…

PS: And because I am a former camp counselor, I can’t help but play this clip from my beloved, Meatballs. And yes, as a matter of fact I am ready for the summer! Are you ?!

Greetings Nature Detectives! Can you believe it’s November, and the Holiday Season is upon us?!

But remember, just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you and the kids can get out there and play and explore nature! Dress is layers and keep moving, you’ll keep plenty warm. Besides, it’s a great excuse to make hot chocolate — to warm up after an outdoor adventure!

So, let’s get to our Mystery Critter. Put on your thinking caps and let’s get to it! And remember — no cheating. ;-)

CRITTER CLUES:

  • I make my home in pine-oak forests and woodlands
  • I have a unique voice
  • I was once almost hunted to extinction
  • I am a fast runner
  • I am a polygamist

So, what am I?

Make your guess then go to eNature for the answer and more interesting facts.

Did you get it right?

If not, no worries. You will have another chance soon!

Remember, when looking for wildlife, keep your eyes and ears open! What critters can you spot in your neck of the woods this weekend? Be sure to tell us!

And don’t forget! Join the Wildobs community and share your wild adventures with the world.

Perspective. Practicing what I preach. At the beach. At play. Critters and sandcastles. Happiness. Joy.

At The Beach

You roll down the window
And even before you see it
You smell that salty, ocean scent
You already know your there
At the beach

Where the breeze is best
Where the sun is most powerful
Mother Nature’s birthplace
At the beach

There so much to do
Starting from building sand castles
To finding shells so odd looking
To riding tsunami on your surfboard
To tanning yourself like bread in the toaster
To fishing with your grandpa
To snorkeling with fish
To going on cruises
To riding a dolphin
Just so much to do
The list is as big as space
As long as infinity
At the beach

As you walk on the shore
You see the sky red as the sun sits on the water
You feel the sand filling the gaps between your toes
You hear the soothing sounds of the waves
At the beach

Some claim to see the most wondrous things
Like beautiful mermaids sitting on rocks
Or the mysterious Loch Ness Monster
And even the lost city of Atlantis
At the beach

There nothing better than the beach
Where beauty was given its name
Where Happiness cannot be expressed
At the beach
