Change the First Five Years and You Change Everything

our school

As some of you may know, my “day job” is working in early childhood education. (Naturally, my Grass Stain Guru skills come in quite handy!)

Wile I have worked K-12 for many years, I have to say that the need for quality early childhood education is so profound, that it has really stirred my inner advocate (as well as registered voter!) more than any other professional experience to date.

And speaking of powerful, please watch this video from The Ounce, which I hope will stir a fire or two…

Whether you are a parent or not — and regardless of socioeconomic status — this is on your doorstep. It’s on all of our doorsteps.

Step up America. Any way you look at this issue, including bottom line economics, investing in early childhood is investing in our county.

Thanks for indulging my less playful side today, folks. :-)

  6. The first half of that video is SO sad. I nearly couldn’t watch it all. Thankfully it ended with a smile ;)

I know, Frances! But, powerful — and the outcomes cannot be denied. And I’m glad it ended with a smile, too!

  8. Right on, Bethe! All the education reform in the world is meaningless if we don’t first address the number weakness in education in America: poverty. I sometimes think that parent educators (working with early childhood educators) are the only ones who can break this cycle.

    And I’m with Frances, I almost stopped watching, but I’m glad I didn’t! =)

Right on, Tom. Just back from the National Head Start Parents Training conference. So inspired to see them so eager to learn.

Glad you hung in with it!

  12. WOW! That’s pretty moving stuff. Unfortunately Bethe it’s not just a problem in the U.S. We struggle with this in Australia too … and like Frances and Tom, I’m glad I watched.

  13. Hi Bethe

I’m just catching up on a few of your posts – this video is excellent and relevant to countries all over the world.

What I would like to see is a film in a similar style that’s narrated by children about why free play outdoors is so important. I don’t think we are being hard hitting enough here at present. We need a stomach churn every now and then to stir us up.

    Happy New Year
