Stop & Think #1: Learning Drones

study 2

When discussing the United States’ current education system, Seth Godin says,

“We train the factory workers of tomorrow. Our graduates are very good at following instructions. And we teach the power of consumption as an aid for social approval.”

~ from the book, Linchpin

I couldn’t agree more.

More anti- learning drone prose can be found at the Washington Post in the piece, Why fun in learning is so important.

The “race to the top” is a race to nowhere. Why is this so hard to understand?

I agree. The system is completely flawed.

However, every time I see this quote I want to jump up and defend those awesome teachers who empower our kids to become creative, thoughtful individuals. Yay for good teachers!

  11. Yay for Great Teachers – lets get them a curriculum worthy of teaching. Certainly in the UK the curriculum is very flawed leaving a lot of Great Teachers disillusioned with the profession.

Great article, thanks for posting. Although there are a lot of great teachers, many of them are stuck in a system that doesn’t let them be creative and fun, but rather “teach to the test”. I think that’s why so many more people are homeschooling these days.

  15. Oops, as usual I’m back-commenting behind the times. I’ve had contracts where I’ve had to work through all the education documents in Scotland. Until April 2010, not one Government document on education mentions the word “fun”. Reference to “enjoyment” and “enjoyable” is made. In April “A Curriculum for Excellence Through Outdoor Learning” came out. The draft had one mention of “fun”. I must check if it’s still there.
