I have written on education reform multiple times. It is no secret that I am not a fan of the current American education system, the decrease in free time for children, excessive homework, and the fast track that many parents are putting their children on.
I am really excited to see the upcoming documentary, Race to Nowhere. I hope the medium of film will help raise America’s consciousness, since nothing else to date seems to have spurred any kind of serious cry for reform or given people pause to the adulteration of childhood that is acceptable in today’s society.

Childhood comes but once, and it short and should be filled with magic and the love of learning. I hope we as a society can take steps to move the pendulum back in that direction.

What saddens me the most about this is that these kids are working so hard, but so many seem to be learning so little that will help them to live a happy, productive life. Much of it seems like busywork rather than knowledge building. I have no objections to giving kids hard work to do if it will help them build real-life skills, but pointless busywork is soul-killing.
Kids, even those of us who are called grownups, must also have time for play. It helps to keep us sane in a world that sometimes seems to have gone mad.
This looks like a great film! I sent this post to my mom and mom-in-law. They’re both teachers, and they’ve both expressed frustration with the same things the trailer addresses.
Thanks so much for sharing this. I’m a huge advocate for education reform and it saddens me that I am seeing this push even in the preschool years, with kids racing off to after school activities and parents worrying about how they will cope in Primary school if we don’t have an official school readiness program. In any parenting magazine there are adds for classes or tutoring to prepare kids for school – these kids are 3 or 4. I’d better step off my soap box or I will type forever
I hadn’t heard about this, so thanks for sharing! As I’ve said before, it often feels lonely as a parent who is more concerned about my kids having fun than being involved in what everyone else is doing. I’d love to see this.

This is a sensational find, Bethe! @MyGreenSide –> a.k.a. MyBetterHalf (my wife) sent me here to see this. Wow… I’ve discussed this topic on my radio program on multiple occasions. That said, I WANT Vicki Abeles on my program! I’m going to email you right after I finish this…
And best wishes to you from Fargo, where your current temperature is a comfortable -93 degrees….. but it’s a dry cold.
