TGSG Note: My good friend Wendy Gabriel was kind enough to stop by to host this week’s Mystery Critter. Thanks, Wendy! If you haven’t already, read my interview with Wendy, an eco-writer and mom with a lot of great info to share.
See ya outside! ~ The Grass Stain guru
THRILLED to be doing a Mystery Critter at The Grass Stain Guru! OK, let’s get down to business. This week’s Mystery Critter pick is a favorite of my two little girls. I’m really not sure why, but they can’t get enough of this cute, little… oh, have I said too much?!?
CRITTER CLUES:
- I am found in foothills and brushy areas.
- I love to eat insects but will also eat reptiles, arachnids, mollusks, small mammals and vegetation.
- I am primarily nocturnal but may forage by day in winter.
- I have a litter of 2–4 young born April–May.
- I make my den in rocky crevices.
What am I? Make your guess, and then go here for the answer and more interesting facts. Did you get it right?! Would it have helped if I said the critter was a little stinky? Remember — you’ll have another chance next week!
Now get outside and see what Mystery Critters you can find. And don’t forget to let everyone know what you see! Join the Wildobs community and report your wildlife observations. It’s a wonderful way to keep track of your wild adventures and share information.

My little girls and I gathered around the laptop this morning to read Mystery Critter and imagine their surprise when they discovered it was written by their Mommy! Thank you Bethe!

Wendy, come back and do more of these. I managed to get your one. Bethe’s are so hard! Still, I keep hoping I’ll get one of Bethe’s right. I guess if they were too easy it would be boring.
