This is a great news piece that demonstrates some of the ways that educators are using their school grounds to help bring lessons to life.
Getting kids out of the classroom and experiencing lessons first-hand is a win-win situation. For kids, they will enjoy the lessons far more, and the information will become not just something they memorize, but something they experience and can apply.
For educators, taking lessons outside will help them better reach a wider-range of learning-styles and help them reach kids that struggle in a traditional classroom. This hands-on learning has also been shown to improve scores on the Standards of Learning (SOLs) tests, which like it or not, are something that teachers and schools are held responsible for.
Besides, who doesn’t want to have class outside today?!

I’d rather be outside, for sure. Thinking back, I only ever got to go outside for school a couple of times (excluding times on the sports field) and I remember them vividly. I wish there had been more.

This is great. Thankfully my kids’ teachers both believe in the concept and they go outside often. One time, the outside came in when a tarantula walked in the open doors and right into the classroom.

Even when I was a teaching assistant in grad school I’d take my classes outside. The “kids” loved it and as a science teacher there were plenty of great examples to show.

Great post! It’s so important to get kids outside so they can feel a connection to the environment. Most of my favorite childhood memories take place outside!

Thanks, ladies! After working in school gardening and enviro ed for a decade, I know there are A LOT of really dedicated, passionate teachers getting those kids outside. Now, we just need to get others to join them!
Bethe
“scream our hearts out” : ) Can’t you just feel the stress relief, the permission to be a kid, the sense of well-being? All that and cognitive development, too. Powerful stuff, indeed!
