Happy Frolic Friday — a time dedicated to sharing ideas for outdoor play and natural escapes.
There is so much great work going on to get kids outside and to bring back good, old-fashioned play. Today, I wanted to offer a round-up of some of my fave activity ideas and How-Tos from around the web.
Guru’s Picks for Natural Fun:
- Create a nature Journal: Lori (@campcreek) has some great tips for starting a nature journal. She also makes a mean Field Bag from recycled clothing. This is such a cool project for older kids (and we big kids!).
- Build a Bug Hotel: This cool project will delight kids of all ages. Anja (@eyesonnature) will tell you how.
- Debi (@goexplorenature) has some great ideas for fall fun.
Just a few ideas to get you started. The folks over at Creative Play have a great article for parents. Check out, Playful Parenting Helps Nurture the “What If?”
As always, it doesn’t matter what you do this weekend — just get outside and have some fun! Play and time in nature will help recharge your batteries and prepare you for the week ahead.

I totally second Lori @campcreek and her inspirations on nature journaling. In fact she’s an all-around interesting person and great advocate for kid-centered natural learning.

Got another one for you-my kids loved this so much my 5 year old actually requested we do this at his birthday party! Requires a blacklight, lichens are everywhere and many of them flouresce, along with scorpions, some spiders and other insects. We gave the kids blacklights (stink finders from Wal-Mart/10 dollars or less) and turned them loose in the backyard. The objective was to find the coolest or largest lichen or bug. Lichens may show up bright orange, green or even purple-looks like the trees and rocks have been painted! Great activity, best done right after sunset and everyone gets a kick out of it. Enjoy!
Awesome!!! I have lichen hunted, but not in years. Thanks for sharing, Kristina!
