The Capacity for Joy

“There is no duty we so much underrate as the duty

of  being happy.” ~ Robert Louis Stevenson

I saw this video a few weeks ago and fell in love with it. Not for the exercise benefits of taking the stairs, which I get and support of course, but for the human capacity for joy.

I love the playful spirit, fun, and joy the people have — that all people have. Sometimes, it just gets buried. The tasks of day-to-day living, the chores and responsibilities of life can get in the way, but it is always right there, under the surface.

To me, experiencing  joy and fun IS one of life’s great responsibilities. It is not only your right, but your duty to love this life you have been given. Don’t wait for someone to put a piano keyboard on the stairs in front of you. Make your own fun and joy every day. Play as if your life depends on it, because when push comes to shove, it does.

  1. That’s ace :0)
What I love most is the number of grown-ups who take time out, on their own, to have a little fun on the stairs.
    How cool.
Conclusive proof that having fun as an adult is not something any of us should be embarrassed about.
I’m off to roll down some hills now.

  3. Thanks for another great post reminding us of what’s important. I’ve been using my kids as an excuse to have fun & be silly, but it’s nice to be reminded that maybe I don’t need an excuse! :)

  4. I absolutely love this! We need more things like this to bring people out of their day to day and back into creating and living life – there’s lots of joy and entertainment can be found all around!

  5. I like to compare the experience of reading your blog to how I imagine families of bygone days gathering around the old radio shows. The kids sit on my lap or stand behind my chair and we challenge each other to Mystery Critter or pick activities from Frolic Friday. Today we enjoyed the video together. It sparked their imagination and a conversation on what they would do to make stairs more fun. Thanks for your bright outlook and fresh perspective.

  16. I just love this video and I so appreciate you reminding us about the importance of play in everyday life, for people of all ages. Even rare moments of play are often mediated and overly organized. This shows that there’s always a little time for, and something to be gained from, a little outside-the-box whimsy.
