Value Added

Be glad of life because it gives you the chance to love and to work and to play and to look up at the stars.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the term, “value added.” We use it a lot in business — what value is “X” going to offer our customer or client. By doing “Y,” how will it enhance the experience for our users? But do we ever ask ourselves the same question about our own lives, or the lives of the children in our world?

What value would be added to your life if you made a few minutes more a day to unplug and get outside? To walk, decompress, and listen to the sounds of nature — whatever that means where you are.

How about today’s children? We know that American kids are spending 6.5 hours a day in front of electronic screens, according to the Keiser Family Foundation. What value would be added to their lives if that was reduced? If they spent more time outside playing in the real world, and less time sitting in front of a virtual one?

I would love to hear your thoughts on this –  to hear your value added benefits and ideas.

Now, if you will excuse me, I am off to unplug and go ponder all of this. I need a good shady spot under a tree…

Everyone in our family agrees that we laugh more when we’re unplugged. An awesome benefit, which leads to merrier memory-making too! @klsnature

  9. We don’t do video games and we rarely watch TV. I notice when my kids do watch TV they get really cranky & fight w/each other a lot. So it’s unplugged play for us most of the time. When it’s too hot outside, it’s hide-n-seek inside. It’s crazy, noisy, raucous fun. Squeels & laughter are so much better than bickering on the sofa.

Hear, hear! I too notice a huge difference in my mood, the amount of laughter, etc. when I unplug & get outside more. It’s good for adults and kids alike. Thanks for chiming in and helping to spread the word — #playoutdoors is the new black! Cheers- Bethe

  21. I love the idea of unplugging and getting outside. We encourage our kids to play outside, take them to the park, read a book, etc, and limit their time in front of video games or TV. Five minutes after we say “no more TV today” they are off doing something creative or enjoying riding their bikes outside and don’t miss the stimulation of a game or TV show.

I do, however, think that age appropriate video games (and TV) are…well…just fun to play, in fact I have fun playing the games with them too and this has become another form of family time. But the time has to be limited so it doesn’t takeover.

  24. I don’t have children and no nieces, nephews, etc so I have very little contact with them. I really didn’t have any idea children spent that much time in front of a screen. I mean, growing up, TV was a problem sometimes but since that was the only thing, it was easy for parents to unplug it – at least mine did. Not only did we play outside, but we had a ton of books and board games that occupied hours of our time every day.

Now we have computers, multiple TVs in the home, cell phones and so on. Its time we head back to the basics.
