Ah, the giddy excitement I get at picking a new critter for my Saturday post. I know, I am a goober! That’s right kids, it’s time to play Mystery Critter. A time when we get together to learn more about wildlife and have a bit of fun in the process!
Thinking caps on? I keep wanting to raise the stakes a little — I think you might be getting too good at solving these! OK — here we go. And remember — no cheating! 
CRITTER CLUES:
- I am found throughout most of North America;
- My habitat is wide-ranging — from cities to meadows;
- I live year round in Hawaii (Aloha!) and Southern California;
- I’m a bit sluggish in winter; and
- I have one of the coolest wildlife stories out there!
What am I? Make your guess, and then go here for the answer and more interesting facts. Did you get it right?! If not, no worries — you’ll have another chance next week!
I have no doubt you have seen this Mystery Critter before! But even if you know it, you may not know its amazing story. Wildlife offers us so many opportunities to learn — so many fascinating facts to discover. I hope you will get outside this weekend and check out the wild in your world.

I do enjoy stumping. These are not easy to do — so many obvious clues, but then, where is the fun in that?! ;o)
Well fine, no Yogi in Hawaii…I am really thinking of some water based critters…I am totally stumped….generic guess…a bird.

OMG!!! That was awesome!! You know….we have this critter come through our state …. lil boo saw them for the first time when he was ever so such a really lil boo….I won’t give it away….way cool Bethe!!!!

My son and I were on the wrong track. Daddy got it right! He’s Mr. Nature, though. I live in California – so we’re lucky to see these critters often! Thanks for a little mystery. This is becoming a family activity for us. Saturdays are perfect.
Aww — love that y’all are doing these with your kids & families. I got to see monarch colonies in Santa Cruz, CA. The most amazing natural sight I have ever seen. Giant clusters of them clinging to tree branches in a grotto area — must have been well over 100,000 or more. I was dazzled — stayed for hours, just staring up in awe.
