Play Deprivation Gets Traction

Swings

Recently, the Huffington Post ran a story from Darrell Hammond, CEO of KaBOOM!, on the state of play in America. I encourage you all to read the piece and leave comments. The more voices we add to the chorus calling for change, the better. The first step to advocacy is finding your voice.

From the article…

“Go outside and play,” was once a very common phrase used in America, but those days have gone. In today’s society, children spend 50% less time outside than they did just 20 years ago. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, kids are spending 6.5 hours a day with electronic media — making the sofa or desk chair their favorite place “to play.”

Mystery Critter #15

A Pirates Eyes For Me

Fun wildlife facts. Check. Desire to stump my readers. Double check. Must be Saturday! That’s right kids, it’s time to play Mystery Critter. Let’s have some fun with my little game to test your wildlife knowledge and inspire you to find the wild in your world.

Put on those thinking caps and let’s get to it. It’s Week #15 in the series — your nature detective skills must be getting quite impressive about now. Let’s see if you are “smarter than the average bear!” And remember — no cheating!

CRITTER CLUES:

  • My body-type is the only of its kind in North America;
  • My preferred habitat has sandy soil;
  • I range throughout much of the south east of the USA;
  • I have 4 young per year, and an amazing reproduction process; and
  • I enjoy insects, crayfish, eggs, and carrion.

What am I? Make your guess, and then go here for the answer and more interesting facts. Did you get it right?! If not, no worries — you’ll have another chance next week!

While it is not as widespread as many species, this Mystery Critter ranks as one of the coolest in the animal kingdom in my book (read: one of my personal faves!). Fascinating and comical, they are a sight to see! Even of you don’t spot today’s critter, Mother Nature has something fun for you to discover right outside your front door. So grab the kids or a pair of binoculars if you have them, and go take a look.

Don’t forget to let folks know about what you see! Join the Wildobs community and report your wildlife observations. It’s a great way to keep track of your wild adventures and share info with others.

Frolic Friday: Recapture Summer Edition

P5270530.JPG

Tastes like summer!

Remember summers as a kid? Days so long they seemed to stretch out forever? The rush of diving into the lake at camp, or the taste of the perfect orange popsicle on a hot day? Go ahead — get your favorite summer memory in your mind and hold it there. Got it? That’s what today should feel like. It’s Frolic Friday — time to cut loose and have some fun!

Why not…

  • Have a watermelon seed spitting contest
  • Go swimming and stay in the water until your fingers get “pruney”
  • Head into the woods for a hike in the shade of the canopy. Pick a spot and take a seat. Just let your mind wonder and enjoy the cool quiet of an unplugged moment in nature.

As always, it does not matter what you do — just take some time to enjoy the season and all of Mother Nature’s bounty. Approach the weekend with a renewed sense of awe and the goal of relaxing and finding the fun in your world. Um, and don’t forget the popsicles!

Now, if you will excuse me, there is a tire swing with my name on it.
