Applause all around folks! We did it — made it to Friday! Time to kick off those shoes and get out and get your grass stains for the week! It’s Frolic Friday, so let’s live it up.
I know for a lot of us, money is really tight these days. But don’t worry, there are all sorts of things you can do on a staycation!
Why not…
- Camp out in the backyard — pitch a tent or sleep under the stars. Cook dinner on the campfire and don’t forget the s’mores! No yard? No problem! Go to a nearby campsite or hit up friends with a yard to host a friends & family campout! Check out these fun recipes from KOA.
- Plan a trip to a museum, zoo, aquarium or botanical garden. Nature centers are also fantastic places to visit. Look for discount coupons on websites or in your local paper. Most nature centers are free and offer great family programs.
- Plan a family recreation day. Start with a breakfast picnic in the yard or on the patio/balcony. Then, go play mini golf or rent canoes. Round off the afternoon with a walk through a favorite park and a special treat — an ice cream cone.
As always, it doesn’t matter what you do — just “let your hair down” and have some fun. Most communities have so much to offer — we just get so busy we forget to enjoy it. Unplugging and getting outdoors to focus on fun is such a great way to reconnect with your kids or friends and family members.
Even though money may be too tight for a “real” vacation this summer, a staycation or a series of them can help you feel refreshed and relaxed, and make memories your kids will cherish. Remember, it’s less about where you go than the fun you have while you are there!

Couldn’t agree more. Try your local state park for a great staycation. We went to Sweetwater Creek State Park last weekend. It’s about 15 min. from downtown Atlanta and had a BLAST! Even my two oldest boys who are normally picking at each other constantly ended the day arm in arm calling out, Come on, I can’t do it without you. Boys and dogs, they just need space.
