Happy Saturday, everybody. That means only one thing here at The Grass Stain Guru — it’s time to play Mystery Critter! Let’s have a little fun. Read the clues below and then make your guess. This is a great way to introduce kids to the wonders of wildlife and help get them excited to explore the natural world.
OK my favorite detectives, let’s get down to it. Put on those thinking caps and let’s play. And remember — no cheating!
CRITTER CLUES:
- You will find me in wooded areas and forests;
- I feast on the leaves of shrubs and trees (hazelnuts are one of my favorites);
- I lay eggs;
- I am hard to spot; and
- Birds are my main predator.
What am I? Make your guess, and then go here for the answer and more interesting facts. Did you get it right?! If not, no worries — you’ll have another chance next week!
This Mystery Critter is good at hiding from you, but that makes it all the more fun to try and find. Even if you don’t spot one of these, I have no doubt you will find all sorts of wildlife and natural wonders near you. Get out there and see what you can find!

Ciao Cara, I have to tell you I was curios about this post from the Twitter feed. I had no idea I would enjoy it as much as I have. I will admit I knew what the “critter” was but had no clue of the name.
For the past 4 years I have been living in the Deep South (swamp country, MS) a huge change from San Francisco & Italy. Needless to say the “critters” I have seen here have been amazing. Some are as big as my wire hair Jack Russel… okay maybe I exaggerated a bit. But really some of the grasshoppers here are HUGE. Very pretty to watch but not on my plants.
I am an avid Gardener I will grow anything that has life. My friends make fun of me all the time but they are always in awe when they come back for a visit and notice that “dead” plant I had in the post is flourishing and growing. Keep up the great work, you are a great writer.
