Classroom of Wonders

Find more videos like this on Educating for Human Greatness

The school year has just ended here in the United States. The No. 2 pencils have been put away and the teachers have finished filling out report cards. All the standardized tests have been taken, and children and entire schools have either passed or failed. Things have been learned. Or not. Children have be taught to love learning. Or not. Regardless of what happened this year, a school year has passed and we can’t get it back.

I came across this video of a 3rd and 4th grade class at a public school that focuses on educating the whole child. I was dazzled by what I saw. Laughter. Cooperation. Learning. Excitement. Joy. Engaged and active students. A colorful, spirit-filled classroom. Lots of time outdoors.  Music. PLAY. A school garden — complete with chickens! CHICKENS!

Messy — gloriously messy. Electric. These children were engaged in their own education — active participants. They made choices and decisions. They worked together and independently. They were present and valued.

My hat is off to the teachers, administrators, and parents involved in this exploration and celebration of hands-on learning — a school dedicated to educating the whole child and not merely teaching to a test. I only wish that more children had the opportunity to learn in such a rich, supportive — and yes, even messy — environment. After all, childhood was meant to be messy. Haven’t you heard?

Mystery Critter #11

Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.

~Lao Tzu

I see you!

Happy Saturday, everybody.  That means only one thing  here at The Grass Stain Guruit’s time to play Mystery Critter! Let’s have a little fun. Read the clues below and then make your guess. This is a great way to introduce kids to the wonders of wildlife and help get them excited to explore the natural world.

OK my favorite detectives, let’s get down to it. Put on those thinking caps and let’s play. And remember — no cheating!

CRITTER CLUES:

  • You will find me in wooded areas and forests;
  • I feast on the leaves of shrubs and trees (hazelnuts are one of my favorites);
  • I lay eggs;
  • I am hard to spot; and
  • Birds are my main predator.

What am I? Make your guess, and then go here for the answer and more interesting facts. Did you get it right?! If not, no worries — you’ll have another chance next week!

This Mystery Critter is good at hiding from you, but that makes it all the more fun to try and find. Even if you don’t spot one of these, I have no doubt you will find all sorts of wildlife and natural wonders near you. Get out there and see what you can find!

Don’t forget to let folks know about what you see! Join the Wildobs community and report your wildlife observations. It’s a great way to keep track of your wild adventures and share info with others.

I’m off to find this week’s Mystery Critter. He can’t hide from me for long. (OK, he can — but it will still be fun to look!)

Frolic Friday: Craig Tufts Edition

dogwood_trees

It’s that time again — Frolic Friday! Time to shake off the work week and put more fun back into your life.  This week, I suggest doing some of my friend Craig’s favorite activities. If you did not read my post earlier this week, please do — In Pursuit of Happiness. Craig was a man who knew how to live. He understood life-work balance, and had such a sense of calm about him. I figure we could all learn a lesson or two in that department.

Why not…

As always, it doesn’t matter what you do, just unplug and get outdoors. There is so much to be gained by spending time with Mother Nature. Trust me, you are going to love it!

Now, if you will excuse me, I am off to the garden center to get some flowers for my balcony. Craig would have loved that.
