Frolic Friday: Long Weekend Edition

Sunset Beach Play by

Bravo, folks! We made it to another Frolic Friday. The long weekend has arrived for many TGSG readers. An extra day off from work and school, and with it, even more time to unplug and get outside and play.

In the United States, Memorial Day weekend is the official kick-off to summer, regardless of what the calendar says. A time when BBQ grills get scrubbed down and fired-up, sunscreen gets slathered on from head-to-toe, and a sense of whimsy regains a rightful place in the psyche of society. Of course, I happen to think that whimsy should have a seat at your table year-round. Just saying.

It’s time to forget all the excuses you make that act as barriers to living life for yourself and the kids in your world. No more moving through all the check-boxes and To Do lists. Put play in motion this weekend. Ask Mother Nature to dance! If you have the opportunity to go to the beach — great. But, if not, no worries. Playing outdoors does not have to cost anything, or very little. Mother Nature can show you how to have fun on a budget — and lots of it!

Why not…

  • Take a day trip to a favorite state or national park. For most of us, a trip to the beach is expensive, but a day by a river or lake is usually do-able on most budgets. Go tubing, rent a canoe, or go fishing;
  • Camp-out in the backyard. Toasted marshmallows taste good no matter where you make them;
  • Work with neighbors to block off a part of your street or a cul-de-sac and set up an old fashioned kickball or street hockey game; or
  • Two words: Hammock. Book.

As always, it does not matter what you do, just that you unplug, relax, and go play. We all need it, no matter what our age.

Have a safe and happy holiday weekend, my friends. Now, if you need me I will be slathering on the sunscreen and wandering barefoot through the grass. In my book, everything is better barefoot.
